Our journey into Dexters is not dissimilar to many others. After some life changes, we were in a position to realize our dream of purchasing some acreage, which turned out to be in the beautiful Yarra Valley. The previous owners had the property set up for horse agistment, so we let that run for a short time until we settled in & sorted out what we wanted to do.
After much research about all sorts of farm animals, we bought some commercial Dexter cattle. The main reasons for choosing Dexters were that they were smaller, so less intimidating to a 1st time cattle handler, they needed less room than the larger breeds, they’re lighter so less damaging to the ground, good foragers, good calvers & good mothers.
Starting our ‘farm life’ this way allowed us to decide if cattle would suit the property & our lifestyle at a reasonable cost. Soon after taking delivery of the 1st calves we were hooked & soon purchased some registered purebred heifers. We now have a range of all colours in short & long leg varieties. We love the anticipation at calving time to see if the calf is red, dun or black, long or short legged, male or female. The variation is fantastic. Dexters really are the perfect cattle for smaller acreages.
We handle our cattle regularly, and they all have distinct personalities. They are smart, friendly and curious, and we love spending time with them.
